Shiur Klali (Integrated Communal Learning)

Wednesdays, 9:30am - 12:30pm; 1:30 - 4:30pm

Students and faculty together will explore major themes in Jewish law and theology as a community. In this space we will integrate the tools we are learning in the various courses into a unified discussion, as we probe sources from a range of genres and generations. One day a week will be anchored around two major shiurim distinguished by their dynamic, interactive nature, as we strive to create a learning community that includes everyone in the Yeshiva. One shiur will focus on halakhah by exploring a topic through normative, legal texts. Another will focus on aggadah by exploring a topic though homiletical, exegetical and philosophical texts. Both shiurim will be taught in rotation by various members of the faculty. Topics may include: the concept of kevod hab'riot (human dignity) in Halakhah and Aggadah; the notions of lekhathilah (the ideal) and bediavad (the real) in Jewish law; lifnim mishurat hadin (going beyong the letter of the law) as an ethical concept. Topics will also be responsive to student interests and needs as they develop throughout the summer.
