After a basic introduction to Rashi's commentary and his approach to explaining the biblical text, we will focus on 1) how to decode Rashi's commentary and 2) using Rashi's commentary for thinking about the grammatical, thematic and theological issues that arise out of the Tanakh itself. By the end of the summer, a student in this class should feel comfortable: 1. Independently pursuing further study of Rashi 2. Equipped to use Rashi as a tool for thinking more deeply about Tanakh in general |
