Talmud: Structure of the Sugya

Taught by: Rabbi Elie Kaunfer
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8:45am - 12:15pm

Each unit will begin with a close reading of the Mishnah, as we carefully analyze its structure and meaning. We will then turn to decoding the logical steps of Talmudic sugyot (literary units), empowering the student to follow the flow of Talmudic argument and discussion. By the end of the summer, a student in this course ought to be able to:
  1. Learn Mishnah independently with the use of dictionaries and other tools
  2. Keep up with a guided Talmud shiur
  3. Offer a competent reading of a page of Talmud with the help of the Hebrew Steinsaltz edition and other tools
  4. Have the basic building blocks for appreciating the historical components of a sugya
  5. Look up classical sources referenced in a Jewish book
  6. Walk into a Beit Midrash and feel sufficient ownership to begin an independent learning project
